The University of Ibadan, Ibadan, Oyo State, has been named the best university in the country, taking over the best ranking status from the University of Ilorin in Kwara State.
This was contained in the July 2011 World Universities Web Ranking of universities across the globe.

UNILORIN was ranked second followed by the University of Benin, which moved up to third from fifth position in the January ranking. A private university, Babcock University, Illisan Remo, Ogun State, was rated the 12th best university in the country while another private university, Covenant University, Ota, Ogun State, was rated the 15th best in the July ranking.
 Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State, came fourth, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Kaduna State, came fifth, University of Jos, Plateau State was rated the sixth best while the University of Lagos was rated the seventh best in the country. The University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, Ogun State, was rated eighth best university; University of Port Harcourt, ninth, while the Lagos State University surprisingly was rated the 10th best in the webometric ranking.
Responding to the rating, the Vice-Chancellor, UI, Prof. Isaac Adewole, described the ranking as the true reflection of the Nigerian premier university's position.
He said, "There is no controversy about it that UI is the best not only in the country, but one of the best on the African continent and the world at large.
Adewole boasted that the university had decided to take its rightful position, disclosing that the university had become more active on the website than ever before "because no university in this country can compete with UI in terms of quality education and quality manpower" He said, "UI produced 40 per cent of all the vice-chancellors in this country. Our annual Ph.D output is the highest in Africa.
