World Wide Web celebrates its 20th birthday

It began as a simple page of links that allowed a group of scientists to share data in the confines of their laboratories.

But in the 20 years since, it has become an inextricable part of the lives of billions of people.

The World Wide Web (WWW) was born on August 6, 1991, when the first web page was launched on the internet by Sir Tim Berners-Lee.

The London-born physicist and computer scientist was working at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) in Geneva when he sought to find a better way for his colleagues to link up.

SAM LOCO PASSES ON AGED 66YRS

While Nigeria’s entertainment industry is still trying to recover from the shocking news of the demise of the Lady of Songs, Christy Essien Igbokwe, it has again been jolted by saddening news. The death of popular actor and comedian Sam Loco Efe was announced today.
He passed on while in his hotel room on location for the shooting of a film in Owerri, Imo State.
The veteran actor shocked many people about two years ago when he announced he was quitting smoking and drinking, two habits he confessed having been engaged in for four decades.
He was aged 66.

2-Year Rent Banned in Lagos

Any landlord in Lagos state who collects rent in excess of one year from a new tenant is liable of punishment by the state government as such action would henceforth be seen as a criminal offence, which will either attract jail term or payment of fine.
This is part of the content of the tenancy bill that was passed by the State House of Assembly yesterday.
This means that those who are already tenants of a building are not expected to pay more than six months instead of the usual one year rent they were mandated to pay by their landlords.
Placed a fine of N100,000 or three years imprisonment on any landlord or new tenant who pays in excess of one year and N100,000 or three months imprisonment for any landlord who fails to issue a receipt to a tenant for payment of rent. According to some of the lawmakers who spoke on the passed bill, the receipt would afford the authorities the opportunity to monitor compliance with the law. They said they  are not unmindful of the fact that some landlords can be dubious and would want to change strategy adding that the law, as has been amended, takes care of those areas.

Motor Boy Drowns As Truck Plunges Into Lagos Sea

A trailer, yesterday, plunged into the sea at the ENL Terminal Berth 9 at the Lagos Port Complex, killing the motor boy attached to the vehicle.
The truck was from the Northern part of the country to load rice at the ENL terminal. The motor boy, who is not a trained driver, got into the truck, started the engine but before anyone could stop him, the truck had moved and plunged into the water.
Efforts to rescue him and the truck were abortive as divers, brought in to assist pull out the truck failed due to high tide.
As press time, the divers were yet to pull out the truck from the sea, as they were waiting for the tide to calm down.
One of the divers, Mr Idudu Soro, said the visibility of the water was zero, adding that nothing can be achieved until the tide was low.
The management of ENL has been making effort to reduce influx of motor boys accompanying their trucks into the terminal.

Why would a boy who is untrained drive a truck in the first place...Nigeria with no effective laws.

A photograph of the actress and fitness guru in the new issue of Harper's Bazaar US magazine shows her looking stunning in a slinky black Stella McCartney dress complete with sheer panels with polka dot detail. 
The actress tells the publication that she has learned to love herself after a long battle with bulimia and issues with her self image.
'I wasn't very happy from, I would say, puberty to 50' she admits.  'It took me a long time. It was in my 40s, and if you suffer from bulimia, the older you get, the worse it gets.
'I was raised in the ’50s,' she explains. 'I was taught by my father that how I looked was all that mattered, frankly.'He was a good man, and I was mad for him, but he sent messages to me that fathers should not send: Unless you look perfect, you’re not going to be loved.'

Now the actress is not letting her age get in the way of vanity.

The Chinese Boy Kept As Slave By Uncle

This 12-year-old Chinese boy has been chained up by his uncle for the past two years.
It’s claimed that this is for his own safety because he’s mentally handicapped – but most people will find these images truly shocking.

The uncle, Cai Quan comments: ‘The kid can't speak at all. Originally his parents thought he would speak late, but later they found he is mentally handicapped.’
According to Quan he has to chain his nephew up because, otherwise, he runs away.
In 2009 Changqing ran out into the road in the city and was severely injured after being run over by a van.
Quan was left to care for Changqing after the boy's mother died and his father was left paralysed from an accident.
Following the van accident Changqing started to chain his nephew up each day, using a 16ft-long length of iron chain wrapped around the youngster's waist.
His treatment brings to mind other instances of cruelty to children in all over the world..

Helicopter Crash Victim, Josephine Kuteyi Has Been Buried

THE remains of Pastor (Mrs.) Josephine Oluwadamilola Kuteyi, who died in a recent helicopter crash have been laid to rest in her home town, Ondo amidst wailing and outpour of encomiums by her relatives, the Ondo community and prominent Nigerians from all walks of life whose lives she touched in her 56-year sojourn on earth.
A special farewell service held at the Oba Adesanoye Civic Centre
in Ondo was attended by the Ondo State Governor, Olusegun Mimiko and
his wife Olukemi, captains of industries and several eminent Nigerians. 

 

Meanwhile, Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed of Kwara State has described the death of the late Managing Director of Bacita Sugar Company, as "a rude shock and monumental loss to the country."

In a condolence message to the Kuteyi family, Ahmed said the death of the business mogul came at a time the state and the country needed her wealth of experience to drive the nation's economy.

The governor added: "Mrs. Kuteyi, within a few years of taking over the Bacita Sugar Company, has not only changed the economic status of the town but has added value to the economic base of the state for which she would never be forgotten."

Mimiko, who spoke with reporters shortly after Kuteyi's interment at her home along Ondo-Akure
road, described the deceased as "a true child of God who never allowed
her chains of business to distract her from the service of God."
